The third annual Women in Museums event, held on March 13, 2025, in Maastricht, brought together leaders from the art world for a day of reflection and discussion on the presence of women in museums and the need to enhance their visibility in the cultural sector. The event continues to establish itself as a key meeting point for international institutions, providing a platform for exchange that encourages new collaborations while highlighting the work of women in art and advancing real inclusion within the sector.
Organized by Mercè Valderrey Art, in collaboration with the Athena Art Foundation, this year’s event hosted a special guest for the opening speech: Annick Lemoine, Director of the Petit Palais in Paris and curator of the highly acclaimed Jusepe de Ribera retrospective in France in 2024. Lemoine shared her perspective on gender equality in the museum field, as well as the challenges and opportunities women face when taking on leadership roles in cultural institutions.
During the event, Mercè Valderrey once again presented the digital map of galleries participating in TEFAF 2025, exhibiting works by female artists. The number of participating galleries nearly doubled compared to the previous year, with more than 500 works by women artists, spanning painting, sculpture, jewelry, and decorative arts, from ancient to contemporary art. The map was, once again, an invaluable tool both for collectors to ensure they did not miss any of the most prominent works by female artists, as well as for promoting and increasing the visibility of their work at the fair.
